About Us

Salt Lake Piano Service is dedicated to giving new life to instruments.

Whether the instrument will serve the teacher, the concert stage, or stand for decades as a beautiful memorial to a loved one, we take great care in turning out an object of beauty, longevity, and structural integrity that will be enjoyed for decades to come. From the inside to the outside, we combine our love for fine piano touch and tone with excellent craftsmanship to produce a product that is stunning in both sound and appearance.

Other companies produce results that look appealing to the average eye, but we don’t stop there…we make sure that every aspect of the instrument functions as it should to high performance standards, and represents its best tonal character to the beginner as well as the concert pianist.

Hyrum Weibell

Hyrum began learning how to repair pianos as a music student at Brigham Young University over 20 years ago. Since Steinway pianos make up a large percentage of pianos at just about any university or performance venue, experience with these fine instruments came early on. Hyrum volunteered as an apprentice in a local rebuilding shop and developed a fascination with learning which elements of piano construction are responsible for excellent touch and tone, and how to manipulate and adjust these elements for the best sound.

After some years working full-time for one of Salt Lake area’s most prominent piano stores, Hyrum was offered an opportunity to receive factory training at Long Island City, New York at the original Steinway and Sons production facility. He quickly became the lead technician for Salt Lake’s Steinway dealer (Daynes Music) and was subsequently hired by Steinway and Sons as a contractor to handle warranty issues in the Mountain West area. Hyrum was one of the first to receive training in New York on Steinway’s Spirio piano player and recording system and regularly services many of these instruments.

Hyrum’s piano playing skills, which he has developed since the age of 6, have allowed him to quickly diagnose issues and understand the needs of the most demanding pianists and situations. Hyrum has tuned for the Utah Symphony for over 13 years and for the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition for over 10 years.

He is the lead technician for Utah State University (an all-Steinway school) and provides tuning services for many who make their living at the piano. His experience with performing artists of the highest caliber help him stay in touch with current aesthetic trends and needs of pianists today.

Being plugged into the concert and recording scene helps Hyrum bring restored pianos to a higher level of performance in touch and tone, making them capable to serve the needs of a modern-day pianist while at the same time preserving classic elements of these historic instruments. Hyrum’s goal is to master the art of taking a worn instrument and turning it into something beautiful that creates endless musical possibilities for expression and art.
